This knowledge base explains how data deletion works in our S3 object storage service, including immediate deletion, versioned data, retention policies, and certification procedures.
This guide explains how data deletion is managed in Myota’s S3-compatible object storage, providing clarity on deletion procedures, what users can expect when submitting a deletion request, and key compliance and governance considerations. By walking through the phases of the deletion process, available options, and requirements, the information here helps ensure your data lifecycle management aligns with organizational and regulatory standards.
When Myota receives a deletion request via support@myota.io, the designated data is scheduled for removal from our storage infrastructure. Completion times may vary from about an hour to several weeks, depending on data volume, operational load, and compliance obligations.
Myota employs rigorous, industry-aligned deletion protocols to safeguard customer data. As a SOC 2 compliant provider, Myota upholds strict security controls and references industry frameworks such as NIST SP 800-53 for maintaining system confidentiality, integrity, and availability. For secure data removal and storage sanitization, Myota adheres to NIST SP 800-88, which governs the procedures for clearing, purging, and destroying customer data on storage media.
Throughout the entire data lifecycle—including installation, service, ongoing operations, and decommissioning—Myota applies these standards consistently across all managed environments. When storage devices reach end-of-life or are retired, they are decommissioned in accordance with NIST SP 800-88 to ensure complete and secure destruction of any residual data.
Important Details
-
Billing: You will not be charged for storage once your data is marked for deletion.
- Access: Once this request is received and processed your data is no longer accessible.
-
Permanence: Once the deletion process completes, your data will be permanently and irretrievably removed from all Myota systems.
Data Deletion Timelines and Expectations
Myota employs a multi-stage, asynchronous deletion process designed to maintain system integrity and optimal performance. When a delete operation is initiated, data is first marked and queued for removal, then physically erased from storage—mirroring established best practices in leading cloud platforms.
- Once the deletion process is finalized, Myota confirms that all data has been securely eradicated and is completely inaccessible.
- Customers may request a Myota Statement of Data Destruction which is confirmation of successful deletion of data once complete.
- Very large datasets (e.g., 60+ TBs): deletion can take a month or longer depending on the dataset size and versioning.
- Data subject to active retention policies or legal holds remains protected and cannot be deleted until those restrictions are removed.
